New Braunfels, Old Friends And Yeah... I Shot My Son in Law.

Texas does not disappoint! A few things you need to learn to fit in well in Texas.

1. Don't shoot your son in law....more on that later.

2. It's pronounced H-E-B, not HEB, which is a dead giveaway that you're not from around these parts :)

3. Don't you dare go the Walmart you traitorous Son of a B****! 4. It's Yes Ma'am, Yes Sir and Howdy, not Hey, Yo and Hi. 5. Everybody's polite on the country roads and parking lots, absolutely no pavement warriors cutting you off and stealing your parking space. But if you want to buy baby chicks at the feed store, that's an NFL worthy scrum! 6. If you love freedom, rodeos, live music, $3 gas and $3 beers, you will fit right in. Julie has been back in Carlsbad for the past few days checking in on old friends, family and her hairdresser before she joins me in Phoenix for the Padres Spring Training season. This has given me a chance to hang with family here in Boerne and visit a long time friend and his family in New Braunfels.

Pro tip: The Outland Fire Pit makes an excellent tool to cook Huachinango Frito or Fried Red Snapper. We're loving this fire pit as it does quadruple duty as a fire-pit, Paella cooker, Pizza Oven and Fish Fryer.

I caught up with a longtime friend with a long shared history, who lives about 30 minutes away in New Braunfels. One of the great things about living "On The Great Open Road" is visiting friends and family, spending quality time with them and exploring where they live. New Braunfels is about 20 minutes from San Antonio and is another in a series of wonderful Hill Country towns.

Jeff and his family welcomed us (myself, my daughter and my son in law) and showed us around their 30 acre ranch and ranch home. We did a little off roading and a little shooting followed by a few pints at a German Beer garden called Krause's.

Yeah, I shot my Son in Law.... Let me try to explain.

I had the absolute honor of shooting a 1884 Saddle Ring Winchester and a 110 year old Single Action Colt 44-40 revolver on the Ranch. It was an experiance that transported you back to the wild west firing these amazing guns that literally "Won the West." After a half hour of safety training and wearing appropriate attire, safety glasses and ear muffs it was "pling-pling" time on the range. On one of my shots, the bullet hit the edge of the metal target which fragmented the lead sending a ricochet fragment right through my Son in Law's jeans who was standing about 10 feet to my right and behind. You got to watch to the very end of the video! Later that afternoon on the porch having beers, Butch says "I think I have a rock in my boot." He takes off his boot and the lead fragment falls out of his boot! Though his jeans and then down to his boot! WOW!

Watch until the end! Lucky son of a gun now proudly wears a pair of jeans with a bullet hole in the thigh area from a 44 Winchester! Just a nick on the leg, with no need for stitches or even a band aid. Seriously, safety is always a top priority on the range and anytime you handle a gun, It's not to be taken lightly. This incident was a one in million occurrence with a small fragment ricochet. It happens, and I can boost that yeah, I shot my son in law. I'm a hell of shot! Jeff and family, thanks for a great time, a great visit, a lifetime of friendship and for the story of a lifetime! Just a few more days in Texas, We are going to Luckenbach Texas tonight!
