As foodies and wine lovers, Julie and I have been very fortunate to have spent some wonderful time in Spain a few years ago in the Barcelona and Valencia regions. It is there that we fell in love with the national dish of Spain, Paella. This region of Spain is famous for its Paella and Bomba rice, specifically Valencia Paella. What a culinary gift to the world! At home we are avid Paella lovers. often cooking this wonderful Spanish dish for large gatherings of family and friends. As we prepared to hit the road for a year in our 2021 Tiffin Open Road 34PA we knew it wasn't possible to take our large Paella pan and burners that we use at home. Really a bummer!

Unfortunatly, we were not going to be able to take the large gear needed for a proper Paella to be prepared on the road with us.... or so we thought. Enter Julie's brilliant Idea. The main issue that needed to be overcome is the need for a powerful circular burner. Typical camping gear like a stove top burner, Coleman stove, Bar-B-Q, or hot plate simple don't have the powerful BTU's needed to cook a Paella. These devices typically have a 6k to 15k BTU burner and its not enough to get the good soft boiling action needed for a Paella. While on a couple of the shake down trips with Coach Addy, Julie noticed that most campsites were using a propane fire-pit instead of a wood burning fire-pit. First of all, in about half the campgrounds it's the only type of fire they allow and secondly at $8 a bundle of wood that wood fire can easily cost you $24 a night to enjoy. We noticed how strong the flame was and after a little research, Julie found the perfect fire-pit that would do double duty as a perfect Paella burner also! Paella in all its forms was back on the menu for the Great Open Road and we were "happy foodies" once again. The Outland 21" fire-pit with it's 58k BTU adjustable flame, stable circular base and a tall rim that a circular grate can sit on, makes a perfect and amazing Paella burner. So good that I would highly recommend it for home use as well, unless you need to serve over 12 folks.
The only addition or alteration necessary to turn this fire-pit into an amazing Paella burner was to purchase a round grill top to set the Paella pan on. 24"Round Grill Top There are several good videos and recipes on how to make an authentic Paella on youtube, here are just a couple for you to try. As Julie says "Work The Problem" we did, and our desire to have a world class culinary experiance on the "Great Open Road" coupled with our observations and "problem solving" led us to this great solution that turns a normal camp fire-pit into a Paella burner. Stay tuned and subscribe to this website as we will post a complete video of how we make a Paella on the Great Open Road in the near future.
